Reem

Our names....

Oh, what effort our parents put into finding them, hoping their meanings would reflect our personalities. But names are just words; names don’t define us. Our eyes are what truly reflect our souls.

Just a few months ago, I was wondering what the story was behind my name, if any at all. My mom told me that she was the one who named me. She gave me the name of an Iraqi singer who she loved to listen to many years ago. I looked up Reem’s songs, sent them to my mom and waited. She was so pleasantly surprised to hear something from her beautiful times.

As a name, Reem holds ancient Arabic roots and a beautiful meaning. Many ancient poets used this name in their poetry to symbolize beauty because it is means little white deer, or desert deer with wonderful eyes. Although the word Reem may seem easy to pronounce, it is still a foreign name to many. One common mispronunciation of my name is “Rim”. It is fascinating how a beautiful and delicate name in Arabic may sound like a part of a car tire in English.
