About
Roots on 6 (formerly know as Roots of Resilience) is a communal space and digital storytelling platform that highlights the resilience and steadfastness of Indigenous, refugee, and newcomer communities on Treaty Six lands. Our mission is to provide a space where diverse stories can be shared, celebrated, and preserved, fostering a deeper understanding between indigenous and newcomer communities.
Our Story
Our story began with the convergence of World Refugee Day and Indigenous People’s Day, two events we’ve been commemorating simultaneously for years. This initiative resulted in a multi-year collaboration between IslamicFamily, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Catholic Social Services, the Newcomer Centre, the Mennonite Central Committee, and the City of Edmonton.
Through our platform, we honour the heritage and experiences of those who have been colonized, marginalized, or displaced. Whether through digital stories, art exhibitions, or community events, Roots on 6 strives to create create spaces where multigenerational refugees, newcomers and indigenous peoples feel right at home.
