Humility and Flourshing

VOLUME 1: WHAT’S IN A NAME?

IN THIS ISSUE

Humility and Flourshing

My name is Lei, which is pronounced as /lay/. In Chinese, there are more than 70 characters that spell as "Lei." My name was given by my mother whose last name sounds the same way as my first name. She felt that me taking on both my dad's and her name is doubles the parental blessings. Lei is a common name for girls in my generation as it represented flourishing and modesty. Modesty is a virtue that is highly valued in a collectivist culture. Although I have been living in Canada for almost half of my life and have adopted many individualistic values, I always remind myself to stay humble and respect differences.
